The current estimate of the number of insects, thus including those not yet known, varies in the range 2 to 30 million. Most insect's neodhaleného is located in rain forests, but new species will appear as in Europe. Currently it is known in the Czech Republic about 30 000 species of insects and across Europe over 100 000 species. Size of the current insect adults ranges from 567 mm (see Phobaeticus chani) to 0.139 mm (see Dicopomorpha echmepterygis).

Study of insects (Insecta Latin which means "divided into sections") is called entomology, from Greek εντομος, which again means "carved into sections". Insecta name is created by partitioning the body and head (was six body cells), chest B (originated from three body cells) and C bottom (visible from eleven articles). Previously, the insects were also used the name Hexapoda (Greek Hexapoda), which is not currently used for the higher group (subphylum).
