Coccinellidae

Coccinellidae is a family of beetles, which are popularly called Ladybug. In English-speaking countries they are called ladybirds (England, Australia, South Africa), ladybugs (North America) or lady beetles (preferred by some scientists). Family name is derived from the name of the genus, coccinellid (Coccinella).

Coccinellidae are spread around the world and is described over 5 000 species. Coccinellidae beetles are large 1 to 10 mm and are mostly yellow, orange or bright red with small black spots on elytra black, with black antennae, head and legs. A large number of species is all black color, brown or gray, so for the layman are indistinguishable and are regarded as another kind of bugs.

Coccinellidae are generally considered beneficial insects because they feed on aphids and other insects prejudicial to the fields, in gardens, greenhouses and similar places. Some people consider them as the bearers of good fortune when they coccinellid land on the body, while killing them popdle superstition brings bad luck. Some species can be pests.
